"Gifted?" Stop it.

I see this new coinage everywhere. He "gifted" her with diamond studs after the birth of their baby. They "gifted" me a set of tupperware at the grocery store.

Monstrosity. Just say gave.

Isn't it ugly?

Here's one that bugs me, though it's of older coinage: "He felt obligated to take his mother out to dinner."

"Obligated"? The word is "obliged". Why the extra syllable?

Oblige, obliged. Obligation.

Obligated. Pfft!

:-)

But then you can't say "regifted". I believe in recycling.

Agreed. Disgusting. If you're going to F with the English language, at least make it shorter.
